Washing Machine Not Draining? 7 Things to Check Before You Call

You open the lid and see a drum of dirty water. Before you panic, know that many drain problems are simple. A sock, a coin, or a kinked hose can stop a washer cold.

Start with safety

Unplug the washer. Have towels and a shallow pan ready. If the drum is full of water, know that a lot of it may come out when you open a filter or hose. Never reach into a machine that is still plugged in.

Seven checks, in order

1. Check the cycle. Some cycles pause with water in the drum. Try the drain or spin cycle.
2. Look at the drain hose behind the washer. Straighten any kinks.
3. Check that the hose is not pushed too far into the standpipe. It can create a seal that blocks flow.
4. Clear the standpipe or sink drain if water backs up there.
5. Open the pump filter on a front-load washer and clear coins, lint, and socks.
6. Check for a clogged pump on a top-load washer, if the manual shows a way to reach it.
7. Look at the display for a drain error code and check your manual.

Other reasons a washer will not drain

• Too much soap. Suds can trigger a slow drain or a stop.
• An unbalanced load. Some washers pause if the load is uneven.
• A failed drain pump. You may hear humming or nothing at all.
• A lid or door lock fault that stops the cycle before the drain.
• A control board problem, which is less common.

How to clear a pump filter safely

1. Unplug the washer and place towels and a shallow pan under the filter door.
2. Open the small door and, if there is a drain tube, pull it out and let the water run into the pan.
3. Unscrew the filter slowly and let the rest of the water drain.
4. Clear lint, coins, hair ties, and small clothing from the filter and the opening.
5. Screw the filter back in fully so it does not leak.
6. Plug the washer in and run a drain and spin cycle.

How to prevent drain clogs

• Check pockets for coins, tissues, and hair ties before every wash.
• Wash small items like socks and bras in mesh bags.
• Use the right amount of high-efficiency detergent. Extra soap does not clean better.
• Clean the pump filter every three months if you have a front-load washer.
• Do not overload the drum. It can push lint toward the pump.

These small habits help the pump last for years.

What a washer drain repair usually involves

A technician starts with the simple checks: the hose, the standpipe, and the pump filter. Then they test the drain pump and the controls. Many jobs take one to two hours, and a written estimate comes before any parts are replaced.
